1. Conduct a limited horse-guided experience
The learner achieving this unit standard will be able to;
conduct a limited guided experience as a backup, horse trail-guide
practice as a backup guide and assistant in a horse trail safari operation
On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
- Ride a horse at an intermediate skill level
- Handle a group of horses from the ground in a safe, controlled and sympathetic manner
- Show a basic understanding of horse care
- Assist with basic horse yard and equipment management
- Assist clients in mounting and dismounting
- Ride as a backup guide on trails
The course duration is four weeks (if riding skills are in place)
2. Conduct an advanced guided horseback experience with clients to view potentially dangerous animals
- The learner achieving this unit standard will be able to;
- Guide clients on a safe, well conducted horseback excursion with the intention to view animals which are potentially dangerous, with efficiency and maximum safety to the guests, the horses and themselves.
- Conduct a guided horse trail riding experience as a lead guide.
- Extend the range of guided experience available to clients who wish to cover sufficient terrain beyond what can be accessed on foot.
On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
- Prepare to conduct a guided nature experience on horseback in areas where potentially dangerous animals may occur.
- Interpret the behavior of animals in the broader ecological context in terms of human and horse safety.
- Maintain constant monitoring of the experience and environment.
- Lead an advanced guided horseback experience to view potentially dangerous animals.
- Handle emergency situations that arise while leading an advance guided experience.
- Understand and discharge the general leadership responsibilities of a lead horse trail guide.
- Demonstrate the ability to ride a horse at a strong advanced skill level and to assist clients in horseback skills.
- Handle a group of horses from the ground in a safe, controlled and sympathetic manner that benefits horses and riders.
- Demonstrate an understanding of horse care.
- Know and understand horse yard and equipment management.
- Assist clients to mount and dismount and adjust or change tack.
Course duration is from six to eight weeks. |
