Get Involved - Get Involved
Written by Traci

If walking along a well worn game path through the African bush, sitting around a campfire listening to the calls of the wild or sipping a well deserved drink, while watching the African sunset appeals to you, then African Dream Horse Safaris is the place for you to visit.

The environmental aspect of the program is made up of modules which include the following:

  • Geology
  • Ecology
  • Taxonomy
  • Botany and grasses
  • Introduction into the biomes of South Africa
  • Arthropods
  • Amphibians
  • Reptiles
  • Fish
  • Birds
  • Mammals
  • Animal behavior
  • Tracks and signs
  • Conservation management
  • 4x4 driving
  • Firearm handling
  • Guiding techniques

Each of these modules will either be dealt with in practice, theory or both. The main objective here is to create a love and an awareness of the environment, with conservation as the main drive. Students will be subjected to walks, game drives and when possible techniques in maintenance, such as on roads, fences, erosion, brush-clearing etc, as well as game capture, research and monitoring programs. They will also get the opportunity to learn skills such as conducting game drives, basic tracking and so forth and will participate in the daily activities involved in managing a private nature reserve. They will be exposed to driving a 4x4 vehicle in an environment to which these vehicles have been designed. Students can also safely learn how to use a variety of weapons and how to shoot them correctly.
