Conduct an advanced guided horseback experience with clients to view potentially dangerous animals

The learner achieving this unit standard will be able to;

    1. guide clients on a safe, well conducted horseback excursion with the intention to view animals which are potentially dangerous, with efficiency and maximum safety to the guests, the horses and themselves

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:

    1. Prepare to conduct a guided nature experience on horse back in areas where potentially dangerous animals may occur
    2. Interpret the behavior of animals in the broader ecological context in terms of human and horse safety
    3. Maintain constant monitoring of the experience and environment
    4. Lead an advanced guided horseback experience to view potentially dangerous animals
    5. Demonstrate correct firearm use while ensuring the safety of participants
    6. Handle emergency situations that arise while leading an advance guided experience
    7. Understand and discharge the general leadership responsibilities of a lead horse trail guide
    8. Demonstrate the ability to ride a horse at a strong advanced skill level and to assist clients in horseback skills
    9. Handle a group of horses from the ground in a safe, controlled and sympathetic manner that benefits horses and riders
    10. Demonstrate an understanding of horse care
    11. Know and understand horse yard and equipment management
    12. Assist clients to mount and dismount and adjust or change tack

Learning assumed to be in place:

    1. Literacy, numeracy and communication
    2. Advance weapon handling: Effective and safe handling of an appropriate heavy-caliber firearm in compliance with appropriate legislation and regulation
    3. Conduct a horse guided experience (course two)

Course duration:

    1. Six weeks                                                                                                            

(Course 2 plus additional 3 weeks to include animal behavior, advance weapon handling and VPDA, Viewing of Potentially Dangerous Animals)
